Classes

In this Action Art class held at the Carroll County Arts Council, the children proudly display their painted shoes, painted papier mache masks, and their paintings of musical inspirations.

A young student learns of fish anatomy by sketching the goldfish in the jar right in front of her. "Teach me a fish..."

These boys were noticing gills and fins for the first time as they sketched their fish. They were soon creating their own imaginary fish with all the parts in the right places.

Melinda Byrd has been teaching children since the 1970s when she taught a multitude of activities during seven years as a summer camp counselor at Camp Sewataro in Sudbury, Massachusetts. Today, her art classes for children include her most successful techniques of ensuring that FUN will be had by all. She often integrates artistic technique with movement, music, exploration, nature, past experiences, disconnecting the brain, and playfulness in a totally accepting atmosphere. Look for children's classes in Nature Drawing--where children practice drawing everything they see and Action Art--a series of classes where nonstop creativity flows from one medium to the next: sculpture, painting, printing, and collage.

Classes for adults include Nature Drawing--making field observations and keeping a journal, Learning about Nature Through Drawing--where the focus is to really see nature clearly for the first time using a sketchbook as a tool for better understanding. In addition, watch for classes in rya rug making. (See rya page) She recognizes that it is an expensive endeavor for someone to buy a handknotted rya rug. If people learn how to design and make their own rugs, they can have the experience of making a rug as well as the beautiful finished piece. Making the actual knots is so simple, anyone who can sit still can do it. When she teaches a rya rug making class, the student learns the principles of designing, enjoys the weeks or months of knotting the rug, and saves about two-thirds the price of a purchased hand knotted rug.
